Qiru Llama: A Timeless Woody
A modular wooden toy crafted from reclaimed wood, inspired by the ancestral camelids of the Andes. As the first in a growing collection, this playful companion bridges tradition and sustainability, inviting children and adults alike to connect with Andean heritage through tactile storytelling and timeless design.
Academic Project, 2018
Input
El Niño phenomenon
In Peru, the climatic phenomenon ‘El Niño’ occurs annually, which originates in the Andean rains and causes rivers to overflow and landslides, resulting in material losses. This is how the noble material of many homes end up as debris close to being discarded. This project seeks to recover the wood to regenerate this situation in a playful way.

Process
Low-scale manufacturing
Therefore, a second life is given to these materials through the recovery of wood and basic manual carpentry work. Likewise, a new value is added through the interactive modularity of the toy.

Output
A wooden llama
The famous llamas have been domesticated by ancient societies for their subsistence in the Andes. They were identified by the color of their wool, so the type of wood used is directly related to the variety (types and colors) of wood recovered.
