San Bartolo

San Bartolo’s public spaces become a living canvas for exploration and reimagination. Through participatory design, we identified ways to enhance accessibility, identity, and coastal interaction, shaping a strategic vision that aligns community needs, urban policy, and sustainable design. This transformation redefines the district as an inclusive, dynamic, and deeply connected coastal experience.

Context

Transforming San Bartolo

This annual systems design project involved the reformulation of the district of San Bartolo in Lima. In the 2020-1 semester, my team conducted extensive research to project a transparent municipal governance system through a comprehensive restructuring aimed at developing projects that benefit the economic, social, and cultural aspects of San Bartolo. In the 2020-2 semester, I led the the 4th Area: Infrastructure and Tourism, where we conducted qualitative research and fieldwork in collaboration with municipal officials, residents, and merchants. We analyzed the information using many agile methodologies and develop the project called «San Bartolo Routes» under a regenerative tourism approach and socio-natural perspective.

Process

Social-Urban Analysis

Based on the analysis of the district’s urban plan and socio-urban dynamics, tourist points of interest and concentrations of various activities were identified. Four axes with high tourist potential were then conceptualized in two dimensions. Within the sports dimension: the Marine and Terrestrial axes, which include areas of the Beach Resort, Las Lomas, and the Urban Center (where sports activities take place). And within the cultural dimension: the historical and urban axes, which include areas of the Beach Resort and the Urban Center (where cultural activities take place).

Output

Tourism Master Plan

Under the slogan «San Bartolo Sustainable Destination» and based on the pillars of regeneration and resilience, the tourism master plan faims to contribute to the sustainable urban development of the district through the promotion of community tourism. In this way, it seeks to enhance local economic activities as tourist attractions throughout the year, guide the transition towards a district with a consolidated, welcoming and responsible identity for locals and visitors, and promote a holistic approach in the municipal work model that considers social and natural variables.

San Bartolo Routes

With a focus on regenerative tourism, this program aims to revitalize cultural and economic circles through responsible, participatory, and transformative tourism. It takes into account the socio-natural aspects of the district, promoting the regeneration of both natural and cultural environments, as well as socio-technical infrastructure to support commerce. The program also includes a visual identity to convey the district’s new spirit, potential urban interventions to create tourist routes and guide visitors, and physical elements such as tourist maps/postcards and signage.
